Pongour waterfall, a masterpiece of nature, is located in Duc Trong district, about 50km far from the city center of Dalat. The fall flows through a 7-storey terraced stone system with the height of nearly 40m.
The road to Pongour waterfall is quite peaceful and poetic. If you go there in October, you will have a chance to see beautiful golden flowers blooming along the road leading to this magnificent waterfall.
The waterfall is surrounded by a primeval forest of 2.5 hectares with a rich vegetation cover. Here also lives a wide range of ancient trees and wild animals.
The French used to consider this fall as “the most majestic waterfall” in Indochina. Its majestic beauty was also recognized by King Bao Dai, the last king of Viet Nam, as "Nam Thien De Nhat” (the most beautiful waterfall in the South) about 60 years ago. By 2000, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had recognized this place as a historical site and national-level beauty-spot.
Pongour waterfall is also associated with the heroic legend of the K'Ho ethnic minority people. In those days, this place was headed by a wonderful female K'ho chief, named Kanai. She had the ability to conquer wild animals, creating favorable conditions for the benefit of human beings. Among those animals, there were four large rhinos which always complied with her orders to change wasteland into cultivated areas and to fight the enemies, protecting the villagers.
One day, she drew her last breath on the full-moon day of January. The four rhinos stayed beside her day and night without moving just even a step, until they died. It was not long after her death when everyone in the village was extremely surprised by a stunning waterfall appearing in the place where she used to live.
It turned out that Kanai's hair had turned into pure blue water and the large green moss stones as the base for the cascade had been formed by the rhinos’ horns. That’s also the symbol of the close connection between mankind and nature.
